Community and Environmental Projects - Peru
For about 10 years we have run expeditions and impact projects across Peru and partnered with the different communities and NGOs across the country. The projects covered a wide range of communities including the coastal towns of Huanchaco and Tumbes, communities in the Andes such as those of Patabamba and Chichubamba in the Sacred Valley close to Cusco and the Machu Picchu, and communities close to Huaraz along the Cordillera Blanca.
In the coastal community of Huanchaco in Northern Peru, we participated in workshops to build the ancestral fishing boats, the caballitos de totora, made out of reed that the farmers and fishermen grow in the area, and had the chance to test these boats in the ocean. We also organised digging workshops in the nearby Moche ruins with the local archaeologists. In Tumbes, we took our student groups to learn about the turtle conservation project in the area and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
In Patabamba, at 3,900m of altitude in the Sacred Valley (and close to the Machu Picchu ruins), we supported the community by planting trees and medicinal plants, and by building a security wall to protect primary school students from a dangerous cliff adjacent to their school yard. Homestays were organized with the local families where the students got to make friends and immerse themselves in the indigenous culture.
In Chichubamba, also in the Sacred Valley, we partnered with a local NGO to support a local elementary school by building a playground/park, and to help clean the village’s water canal, its main source of potable water. These projects were planned in advance with technical assistance provided by the experts of the local NGO. The students also participated in educational workshops to learn how Peruvians make artisanal honey, chocolate and other crafts.
In Huaraz in the Cordillera Blanca, we organized several community development projects and combined them with active outdoor activities such as a 7-day mountaineering course teaching students to climb all the way to the Vallunaraju summit at 5685m of altitude.
Through our Peruvian expeditions and impact projects we provided support, ideas and financial contributions to the communities and NGOs running these development and conservation projects all the while creating lasting friendships with the Peruvian people.
